The island of Aruba is an autonomous state of the Netherlands, situated not far from the northern coast of Venezuela. As a tourist destination it is renowned for the white sand beaches of its Southern and Western shores. These are protected from the battering of the sea that affects the Northern and Eastern coast which is mostly uninhabited. With relatively low rainfall and a tropical sun tempered by the trade winds that are fairly constant and sometimes strong, the island maintains an almost constant temperature of around 28 Celcius, making it a perfect year round destination. The flat seas and constant wind make it a paradise for watersports such as sailing, windsurfing, paragliding and kite boarding. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also favourite water sports. Inland the flat terrain and deserted roads of the interior are ideal for exploring by bike. Aruba has an abundance of wildlife with numerous colourful birds and lizards including large iguanas and chameleons. Alternatively you could join one one of the group horseback rides offered by many of the stables and explore some of the less accessible areas.
Aruba has an abundance of restaurants covering most cuisines and the food is generally very good but pricey. Alot of Aruba's accommodation is in large mid range hotels although there are a few smaller guesthouses and self catering apartments. There are a few villa rentals but most tend to be in villa resorts.
Direct access on scheduled flights is limited to the US and a number of Central and Latin American countries although there are some direct charter flights from Europe.
