Australia comprises mainland Australia plus the island of Tasmania and various other smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans. It is the flattest driest continent and the sixth largest country in the world. It has one of the lowest population densities as most of its interior is made up of desert and semi arid land known as the Outback. Most of its population live around the coast where the climate ranges from temperate in the southeast to equitorial in the north.

Although Australia is a rather remote destination, it is one of the most fascinating and varied countries to visit. The sophistication of its southern cities such as Sydney and Melbourne contrast with the ruggedness of the Outback. Its unique flora and fauna, such as the Kangaroo and Koala bear are a spectacle. The Great Barrier reef off its northeast coast is the world's largest coral reef and offers a superb snorkeling and diving experience. Australia has everything on one island albeit a very large island. Distances between the diverse locations are great with flight times from Sydney from Sydney to other major cities being 3-4 hours. Alternatively crossing the continent by train from Sydney to Perth takes almost 3 days or from the temperate climate of Adelaide in the south to the tropics of Darwin in the north is almost 2 days.

Unless you have unlimited time to spare it is not feasible to discover all of what Australia has to offer in one trip, so it is worth planning your trip well.

For those who prefer a more traditional holiday of sun, sand and night life why not base yourselves in a villa on the Gold coast just south of Brisbane. This is a popular tourist destination with a subtropical climate, miles of surfing beaches and plenty of night life. Its less than an hour from Sydney by plane and just over 2 hours to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.

For the traveller why not base yourself for a week in a villa in either Sydney or Melbourne to recover from the journey and then hire a car and do a circuit along the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide and on to the mining town of Broken Hill. From there either travel either directly south to Mildura on the Murray River or via the spectacular lake at Menindee where you can wander through the bush amongst red Kangaroos and Emus. From there you travel down a dirt track road through small towns with populations of less than ten often miles from the nearest inhabitants until you reach Mildura. From Mildura travel east through the Blue mountains to Sydney finally returning via Canberra to Melbourne. You will need about 2 weeks for the round trip.

Those were just a couple of suggestions - there are countless others including the Barrier reef, the Outback and the rainforests of the north. Its is a country well worth visiting but it does require time.

Of course, there are plenty of places to stay in Australia. There is a large range of villas, apartments and bungalows on the coast, some of which can be beachfront and many of which have sea views. Inland, there are also cottages, bed and breakfast and lodges / chalets. If you are looking for somewhere special to stay, it is always possible to find luxury boutique spa accommodation. These can be quite small resorts or retreats, where the personal touch is key. Finally, there is the the unique Australian homestay or farmstay experience giving you the opportunity to stay in a typical Australian house or on a farm in the Outback.
