Klagenfurt is a major city and capital of the state of Carinthia in Austria. Sitting amidst low mountains on Lake Worthersee, it has a fascinating Italianate Renaissance old town centre and baroque cathedral. Surrounding the city are numerous castles and manor houses, some of which are also hotels.

Being one of Austria's warmest mountain lakes, the Worthersee is a popular destination and has a large beach. This is a beautiful spot, combining 19th century grandeur with fantastic views. Further afield, the smaller but equally lovely Lake Millstattersee is also a great place for swimming.

Klagenfurt is also a world-famous winter sports centre and there are numerous ski resorts nearby - Bad Kleinkirchheim, Annenheim and Mariahof to name but a few. Gerlitzen has reasonable skiing along with some fantastic views.
