The Bahamas, formerly a British colony and now an independent state, is a group of around 700 islands and cays that lie in the Atlantic north of Cuba and just 50 miles south east of Florida in the US.
With miles and miles of pristine white sand beaches lapped by shallow crystal clear waters that stretch out to numerous coral reefs, the islands are the perfect destination for all types of water sports.
The multitude of marine life attracted to the shores and the reefs make this a paradise for Scuba divers, snorkelers and fishermen alike. Numerous wrecks scattered around the island with some dating back to the seventeenth century provide added interest for divers. Fishermen can fly fish for bonefish in the shallows or take a chartered boat out to the deep waters beyond the reef where huge game fish such as shark, tuna and marlin can be found.
Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas and once the haunt of legendary pirates, is located on New Providence and is now the commercial centre and hub of tourism for the islands. Its blend of colonial style buildings, victorian mansions, ancient forts and colourful wooden houses, combined with its lively night life of restaurants, bars, nightclubs and casinos and the pristine beaches of the island make it a popular destination. Giant cruise ships dock regularly in its harbour and offload tourists to visit the straw market and shops that sell everything from expensive jewelery to souvenirs.
Grand Bahama, the fifth largest and second most popular destination, is known for its white sand beaches and scuba diving. The tourist centre of Freeport is a modern city, planned for tourism with markets and nightlife. Away from Freeport you can find tranquil spots with deserted beaches. There are plenty of waterfront villas and apartments and beachfront cottages on Grand Bahamas.
The Abacos are a string of islands and cays to the east of Grand Bahama. The main island Great Abaco with its great barrier reef, the third largest in the world, and its numerous cays, is a mecca for sailing and diving enthusiasts. Marsh Harbour is its tourist centre with shops and restaurants, but away from this you will find small villages and resorts. Away from the coast are four forested nature reserves which are good for hiking and birdwatching. Accommodation on Abaco consists of smaller resort hotels, guesthouses and a good supply of self catering accommodation and places to stay.
If you prefer a quiet less developed island then Cat Island with its crystal clear waters, beautiful beaches and unspoilt tropical reef might be a good choice. Here your nightly entertainment will be in small bars playing music and occasionally live entertainment. You can find a small number of holiday rentals, usually small houses and cottages, here.
Among the other islands that are inhabited are Bimini, Berry Islands, Andros, Eleuthera, Exumas, Cat Island, Long Island, Crooked Island and Great Inagua.
