Bonaire is an island at the southern most end of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. It is essentially part of the Netherlands, having 'special body' status. Predominantly it is Dutch speaking, although some English and Spanish are spoken.
Bonaire is best known as a snorkeling and scuba diving location with its many corals reefs easily accessible from the shore. It also has a strong windsurfers fraternity who frequent its eastern shoreline where there are large waves and strong winds. Apart from water sports, horse riding is an alternative pastime.
Bonaire is famous for its flamingo population after which its airport is named. There are no direct flights from the US or Europe with most entry being via Curacao or Aruba.
