Rentals in other areas of Caribbean
The British Virgin islands (BVI), as its name suggests, is a British overseas territory in the north east Caribbean. It comprises a group of around sixty mostly uninhabited islands and cays. Of those that are inhabited only Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke are of any significant size. Nearly all the islands are of volcanic origin with hilly rugged terrain. The one exception is Anegada which is a flat coral and limestone island.
With the Trade Winds that blow almost constantly and the beauty of the islands to behold as you sail past or anchor for a while to laze on the white sand beaches or have a drink at one of the many beach bars, it is no wonder that the BVI is rated as one of the best sailing destinations in the world. When not sailing or lazing on the beaches, you could be participating in one of the many other water sports on offer. Away from the water you can hike through the Sage Mountain National Park rain forest of Tortola or stroll through the Botanic garden in Road Town with its abundance of tropical flowers.
The main island Tortola is modern and sophisticated with little of its original culture remaining. Virgin Gorda is less developed and more relaxed but if you wish to experience true traditional culture you need to visit the islands of Anegada or Jost Van Dyke which are much less developed.
There are plenty of good restaurants spread through the islands, serving among others French, Italian and local West Indian cuisine. Fish and Lobster are popular dishes. Eating out however is not cheap.
For those not staying aboard a yacht there is a good range of self catering apartments, villas and pretty beachfront cottages to let, spread throughout the islands.
