Rentals in other areas of Africa
Cape Verde, formerly a Portuguese colony and now an independant country, is an archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic ocean 500km off the west coast of Africa and opposite Senegal. The islands are a year round destination with warm seas, little rainfall and daytime temperatures ranging between 25 and 29 degrees celcius. Although all volcanic in origin, the islands' geography differs, with Sal, Boa Vista and Maio being mainly flat and sandy while the others are more mountainous with some vegetation.
The island of Fogo is the only island with an active volcano, last erupting in 1995. Exploring inside the massive crater that dominates the island and climbing its highest peak, Mt Fogo do Pico, are among its attractions. Within the crater you will find two small villages built of volcanic rock which exist by producing wine from grapes grown in the rich volcanic soil.
Santiago is the largest and most populated island. It is also home to the capital Pria where the hustle and bustle of its markets offer the best insight into African culture.
Sal, Boa Vista and Maio are the main beach holiday destinations, with their white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. Sailing, wind surfing, scuba diving and fishing are among the many water sports on offer. Sal is the most lively of the three islands with plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal of fresh locally caught fish to the rhythmic sound of Cape Verdian music, for which the islands are well known. Boa vista is much quieter and less developed, but if you really want a retreat with totally deserted beaches then Maio is the island to visit.
São Vicente, or more specifically its capital Mindelo, is a deep water harbour port situated at the foot of two extinct volcanos. It is the cultural centre of the archipelago and home to some of Cape Verde's most famous musicians and artists. Its cobbled streets, colonial buildings, lively bars, restaurants and music are its main draw.
Santo Antao just a short ferry ride from São Vicente, is the most scenic of the islands. Its dramatic mountains, inaccessible revines, neatly farmed terraces and fertile valleys are breathtaking. Most visitors' first experience of this senery is on the journey across the island from their embarkation port of Port Novo to Ribeira Grande on the north coast. Rated as one of the great road journeys of the world, the route starts from the barren landscape of the coast and quickly ascends along volcanic ridges up to the lush green Cova do Paul crater in the centre of the island before decending through villages clinging precariously to the mountain sides and along narrow stretches of road with sheer drops on either side.
Eating out is inexpensive as is shopping for self catering provisions. The cuisine is mainly Portugueses and relies heavily on fish cooked with potatoes, vegetables and rice. Restaurants are plentiful and and menus varied in the larger towns, but on the smaller islands such as Boa Vista choice can be limited.
Accommodation includes 5 star resorts on the more popular tourist islands such as Sal & Boa Vista, with B&B and private self catering villas and apartments also readily available as places to rent.
