Croatia, part of the former Yugoslavia, is a country in South Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Hungary and Slovenia to the northeast and Serbia and Bosnia Herzegovina to the east. Its west coast lies on the Adriatic directly opposite Italy. Geographically it comprises rolling hills to the north and northeast, the rich fertile Pannonian plain to the east, a heavily forested mountainous region at it centre and a rocky Adriactic coastline. Its picturesque coastal waters which are strewn with over a thousand islands are an ideal location for sailors and water sport enthusiasts. It is not only the coastline that offers spectacular scenery, its interior includes 7 national parks offering a wide diversity of natural beauty from the deep Gorges of the Paklenica canyon to the waterfalls and wildlife of the Plitvice Lakes. Croatian cities also offer a lot in terms of history, culture and atmosphere, from the cobbled streets of te capital, old Zagreb, with its numerous museums to the coastal cities of Split and the walled city of Dubrovnik.
The Croatian climate varies between regions. Its coastal region has a Mediterranean climate with mild wet winters and warm dry summers. The mountainous central region has a semi highland climate with longer colder winters and milder summers while further east the climate is more continental with cold winters and hot summers.
Places to stay in Croatia are generally apartments or villas, many with pools. Villas are often relatively modern and luxurious, boosted by the influx of holiday home owners. Many apartments are owned locally and tend to be in small blocks, often right by the sea. There are some more rural properties available, often renovated country houses and farmhouses.
