Rentals in other areas of Caribbean
Cuba is the largest and most populous island in the Caribbean. Until 1997 there was a law making it illegal for Cubans to have contact with tourists and tourism was limited to enclaves where tourists were kept separated from the Cuban population. Since this law was repealed tourists have been free to discover the country, although most still go to the all inclusive resorts of Varadero, Cay Coco and Holguin where you can find the typical white sand beaches of the Caribbean.
For the adventurous Cuba offers a very rewarding and different type of Caribbean holiday.
Havana, the country's capital, is a wondrous lively city where you can marvel at its once fine architecture crumbling before your eyes and where Cubans really do drive around in patched up colourful American cars from the 1950's. Havana has its 5 star hotels and restaurants but also a truly down to earth feel where you can find children playing football in its back streets with old punctured balls and where you will find restaurants in tumbled down buildings selling all sorts of snacks. Take a leisurely weekend stroll down the Malecon, Havana's famous sea wall, and experience the lively atmosphere as the locals come out to party. It is a unique city with a mesmerising atmosphere which is very difficult to describe.
Just driving is an experience, from avoiding the craters on the main highway to the hoards of hitch hikers that encroach on you from the motorway bridges or try to persuade you to stop by their seductive stances. Although not a dangerous place, the situation in Cuba can vary and you should check travel advice, particularly with regard to hiring cars, which is sometimes not recommended.
In tobacco growing areas, particularly Vinyales, it is possible to explore the countryside in on horseback and visit one of the plantations where the tobacco leaves for the famous Cuban cigars are grown and cured.
Cuba offers so much that it is an experience not to be missed.
There is little or no self catering accommodation to rent in Cuba but the next best things are the Casas Particulares. Since 1997 Cubans have been allowed to rent up to two rooms to foreigners. These are like B&B's where you can normally get breakfast and sometimes other meals, which are normally paid for separately. These are great places to stay if you want the experience of living in a real Cuban house with a Cuban family.
