Rentals in other areas of Europe

We have decided to list Cyprus as a single country on this site, but politically it is not a country at all but is divided in two. The northern third of the island is under the control of Turkey and the remaining southern part is the Republic of Cyprus. (Although small parts of the country remain under the control of the UK). A buffer zone, controlled by the UN, divides the two halves, but hostilities have largely abated. There are two currencies here, the euro in the south and the Turkish lira in the north. Euros and UK pounds are also acceptable in the north. Languages are Greek in the south and Turkish in the north. English is also widely used.

Temperatures here are amongst the hottest in the European part of the Mediterranean and are frequently warm even in winter. Food is typically Mediterranean, including alot of fish and salad and some specialities such as Halloumi cheese and stuffed vine leaves.

Southern Cyprus may seem all sun, sand and fun (Ayia Napa perhaps typifies this), but step away from the coast and you will find yourself in the Troodos mountains. It is also possible to ski here and forest trails are available in the lower reaches of the mountains. Religious architecture also abounds, including Cyprus' famous 'painted churches' and many monastries. Much of the architecture of the island has a strong Venetian influence, owing to the historical occupation of the country.

Northern Cyprus has the reputation for being far more unspoilt and rural than its southerly neighbour, although building here has been on the increase in recent times.

Accommodation across the entire island is typically Mediterranean, featuring largely villas and apartments. There are also small hotels, with larger resort hotels in the south.
