Rentals in other areas of Caribbean
Dominica is the northern most of the Windward Islands. It is the newest island in the region and is still being formed by geothermal volcanic activity. It has the world's second largest boiling lake.
It is known as the Nature Island of the Caribbean for its mountainous interior with many waterfalls, rivers and lush rainforests which support an abundance of rare plants and animals. Offshore its seas are home to many large fish such as merlin and tuna and marine mammals including whales, dolphins and porpoises, making it a popular fishing and whale watching destination. The marine life and geology of sea floor around its coast, where you can dive into sunken volcanic craters or snorkel above bubbling active volcanic vents, make it an excellent location for scuba diving. There are a few white sand beaches on its northeastern shores but most are of a volcanic black/greyish sand.
Its interior is mountainous and covered in lush green vegetation. Exotic plants cloak the forest floor while colourful butterflies hover. Over 170 species of exotic birds occupy the tree tops, including the Sisserou Parrot, Dominica's national bird and one of the largest parrots on the planet. There are as many rivers in Dominica as there are days of the year and these feed specular waterfalls crashing down into fresh water lakes where you can take a refreshing swim. Where the land is cultivated, plantations of banana, citrus and tropical fruits carpet the mountain slopes.
Eating out in Dominica is less expensive than on some Caribbean islands. Local cuisine is based around fresh fruit and vegetables, which can be grown in abundance on the fertile soil, and on fresh fish. Chicken is also a favourite meat while the national dish of Mountain Chicken is a form of frogs legs which are abundant on the island and which taste of chicken.
Dominica is not known for its nightlife with most after dark activity confined to restaurants and bars. There are a few discos and clubs in its capital Roseau, which play live music.
Places to stay on Dominica are mainly small hotels, guesthouses and inns dotted around the island. There are a growing number of self catering villas becoming available for rent, but the supply is limited, so make sure you book your accommodation early.
