The Bouches du Rhone department (literally mouth of the Rhone or Rhone estuary) is the most south westerly department of the Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region of France. This is very much more Provence and less Cote d'Azur and, in many ways, the area has more in common with the Languedoc Roussillon departments to its west. Here you will find historic cities such as Arles and Aix-en-Provence and the surrounding countryside is covered in the lush green of vineyards rather than the coastal cragginess of its neighbours to the east.
There are still privately owned villas and apartments with sea views, and studios by the beach here. The famous Provencal Mas (old stone built country or village house) is, of course, ubiquitous. As with almost everywhere in France, the rural gite can provide a special place to stay for that family getaway. And don't miss out on stylish B&Bs or privately run hotels.
