The Dordogne is one of the most popular areas of France, both with holiday makers and ex-patriots alike.The Dordogne region, which takes its name from the river which flows through it is known for its castles, bastides and churches and well-preserved picturesque villages. Prior to being renamed in the French Revolution, this area used to be known as Perigord and this term is still often used today. There were four Perigord areas - Vert (green) named after it lush valleys, Blanc (white) named after its limestone plateaus, Pourpre (purple) owing to its wine and Noir (black) named after its vast areas of dark woods.
Much of the accommodation in this part of France can be found in gites and old stone houses, converted barns and villas. The Dordogne is also much loved for its chateaus, which can offer stylish and sumptuous venues for holidays and weddings alike.
