The Gironde department lies to the north of Aquitaine and borders the Atlantic ocean. It is the largest department in France. Inland lie the famous wine growing areas of Bordeaux, featuring world-renowned labels such as Medoc, Pomerol, Graves, Sauternes and St Emilion. The landscape is dotted with picturesque castles and chateau set amongst rolling vineyards. A great way to explore is to follow the Route des Chateaux du Medoc.
The Atlantic coast boasts spectacular long stretches of golden sand (126km in all), fringed with pine forests. Beaches vary from calm shallow waters, ideal for children to good standard surfing beaches. The coast is also lined with a series of lakes, formed behind the dunes of the beaches. Near Arcachon, the Dune de Pilat can be found. The is the highest sand dune in Europe and offers spectacular views.
