Languedoc-Roussillon is one of two French regions bordering the Mediterranean, the other being Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The region comprises the departments of Lozere, Gard, Herault, Aude and Pyrenees Orientales. All but Lozere are on the coast.
The Landscape is varied ranging from the large flat plains of the Rhone valley in the east and the low sandy beaches and lagoons of the Carmargue and most of the coastline, to the more mountainous regions of the west and north west where the Pyrenees and Cevennes provide some dramatic scenery.
The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers, rainy winters and pleasant spring and autumn days with lots of warm sunshine interspersed in the early spring with some cloudy cooler rainy days.
The region is one of the major wine growing regions of France.
Languedoc Roussillon abounds with special places to stay. On the coast, it is always possible to find seaside apartments, modern town houses and villas with pools - detached or linked, some with magnificent sea views. Inland, accommodation is more traditional and typically French, with gite complexes, village houses, farmhouses and cottages. There's a good selection of unique and unusual properties here too - look for watermills, converted barns and farm buildings and, for some extra luxury, chateaus, mansions and manoirs. For short stays or for an experience of French hospitality, there are b&bs, guesthouses and chambres d'hotes. All in all this is a great region for a family holiday or for a romantic getaway just for two!
