The Limousin region sits just south of the centre of France and is less visited than many of its neighbouring regions, which contributes to its unspoilt rural feel. This is a highly rustic region, featuring lakes, mountains and forests, little villages and quiet roads which are a pleasure to drive on. Two major lakes - the Lac de Vassiviere and St Pardoux provide opportunities for fishing, windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking. It is also possible to swim here as both lakes have beaches and even cross country skiing is available on the Plateau de Millevaches. This is an outdoor, relaxed location, great for independent holidays.

Being rural, the Limousin boasts a large number of family friendly gites, some with wonderful views of the countryside. There are village houses, chalets and stone cottages here as well as farmhouses, converted barns and farm buildings. Given the large number of rivers in the region, it is often possible to find holiday homes by lakes and on riversides. For something unique and different there is even the occasional converted watermill. To break the drive through France by stopping over in this unusual area, there are plenty of hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs (or chambres d'hotes) - great for an experience of real French hospitality.
