The Lot-et-Garonne department lies inland in the eastern part of the Aquitaine region, with Dordogne to the north and Gironde to the west, but it is less touristed than its neighbours. It is named after the Lot and Garonne rivers, which flow through it. The climate is mild and the landscape rolls gently. Like its neighbours, Lot-et-Garonne is wine growing country. It is also an important agricultural area where much soft fruit is produced and can be bought at farmers' markets.

Lot-et-Garonne is home to a large stretch of the Lot Valley, which is becoming an increasingly popular holiday spot. The valley is also home to a large number of lakes offering swimming, yachting, wind-sailing and canoeing.

Accommodation here is often in gites and cottages, but there is an abundance of small chateaux and mansions as well. Bed and breakfast rooms are also available.
