Lying in the south-east of the Aveyron department, Millau occupies a significant position, standing as it does at the merging point of the Tarn and Dourbie rivers.
For many years, its low lying accessible position in the Tarn Valley has meant that Millau has been a major river crossing point. At one point, traffic from the A75 used to snake down into Millau, across the valley and back up onto the heights of the Grand Massif. All this changed with the construction of the breathtaking Millau Viaduct, whose elegant profile provides a contant background to the Millau townscape. The viaduct is the highest cable stayed roadbridge in the world. The visitor centre is well worth a visit - look out for the 7 plus euro toll fee on the bridge, though.
Millau is also well known as the gateway to the frankly staggering Gorges du Tarn, whose barren craggy sides host tiny stone villages clinging onto the edges of the river. This is some of the best preserved wilderness in France. Millau is also effectively the south-western gateway to the Cevennes National Park.
The famous Roquefort Cheese Caves are also accessible from Millau.
