Morbihan is the most southerly department of Brittany, with its coastline facing south onto the Atlantic ocean. Its capital is Vannes, a well preserved medieval city. Morbihan incorporates a number of islands, some of which are inhabited and many of which are too small for habitation. Most of the islands are privately owned and excursions are available to some of them. The other dominating features of Morbihan's seaside landscape are its many inlets and craggy headlands - not for nothing is this coastline known as the Cote Sauvage! Interspersed amongst these are small sandy beaches.
Inland, the countryside is often wooded and one of the main attractions is Carnac, with is prehistoric standing stones and megaliths.
Like much of Brittany, places to stay in Morbihan are predominately rural, with gites and thatched stone cottages in abundance. Farmhouses and converted watermills and barns are also available and it is even possible to find houses to rent with their own private fishing lakes. By the sea, accommodation is often in apartments and sea views are not unusual.
