Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur is the most south east lying region of France and epitomises the glamour and glitz of the French Riviera. Bordering the Mediterranean is a string of resorts which are known throughout the world - Nice, Cannes, St Tropez, Antibes to name but a few. Despite this, the Cote d'Azur is also the home of some of Europe's most spectacular coastal scenery, with massive pearly cliffs diving into the blue ocean, roads threading their way up and down and round the water's edge.
This region is not all about chic resorts, however. Head inland only a few kilometers and you will find the relaxed villages of Provence. Some have fantastic views of the ocean below, but their laid back lifestyle is a world away from the frenetic pace of the seaside cities and towns. Going west along the coast, glamour gives way to the more historic appeal of towns such as Aix en Provence, Arles, Orange and Avignon. Heading north, the terrain rises into the Alps, where Briancon holds the title of highest town in Europe. Skiing is available in these more northerly areas.
Given its hugely varying terrain, it is not surprising that accommodation in the area covers a wide range. In coastal areas there are private villas, self catering apartments, beach front houses, bungalows by the sea and ocean view penthouses. Inland, you will find more rural properties - farmhouses, the French mas (usually an old stone-built country or village house), gites, mansions or manor houses and of course bed and breakfast, special guesthouses and boutique hotels. Finally, don't forget that large houses for big groups get booked up early for the peak season!
