Puy-de-Dome is the central department of the Auvergne, which itself stretches from the centre of France southwards. It takes its name from one of the numerous extinct volcanos that dominate its landscape. The Dome volcano is a major tourist attraction for the spectacular views from its summit. The department is host to the A75, a major north south motorway which runs through its centre. To the west lies the Parc des Volcans and to the east the less mountainous Parc du Livradois-Forez, with its mixture of rolling hills, wooded valleys and forested plateau. The region's capital is Clermont-Ferrand, now a lively university town full of bars, cafes and restaurants, having previously been the industrial hub of the region. Medieval villages, spa towns and fine chateaux can be found throughout the rest of the region. Its spectacular unspoilt landscape, with its lakes, flora and forna and abundance of wild life make it an ideal holiday destination for those who enjoy nature and outdoor activities such as walking, hiking and riding or more extreme sports such as paragliding and kayaking. Its villages with their outdoor cafes offer a taste of history and a place to relax in the sun while enjoying the local cuisine and mineral water for which the area is known.
