Var is a department in the South East of France in the region of Provence. Including the islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Le Levant it has over 400 kilometers of sandy coastline on the Mediterranean. Its northeastern boundaries lie at the foothills of the Alps, while to the North the river Verdon, with its magnificent deep gorges, forms a boundary with the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. It is a picturesque department from the tranquil sandy bays of the coast to its rocky, mountainous interior with its hill side villages and vine covered slopes, which as you travel further inland, culminate in the rugged beauty of Gorges du Verdon. Over half of the department is forested including much of the coastal region, where you will find beaches fringed with umbrella pines. Its Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year makes it a very popular place to stay, whether it's for lying on the beach, enjoying a glass of local wine while admiring the view from a hill top village, or kayaking through the Gorges of the Verdon. Notable places to visit are the coastal resort of Saint Tropez for its glamour, the Iles d'Hyeres for their rugged shorelines and natural beauty, the hill top villages of Seillans and Tourtour for their views and ambience, and for the more the more energetic, Castellane as a base for hiking the Gorges of the Verdon or Quinson, where you can hire kayaks to view the gorges from river. While it does not seem to influence the thousands of tourists that visit the region every year I must however make you aware of the Mistral, a strong wind that blows cold air from the north down the Rhone valley to the coast. While it can occur throughout the year it is more prevalent in winter and spring. Normally lasting only a day or two, it can last up to a week and on occasions reaches speeds of over 100km per hour. On the plus side when it blows it normally brings with it clear skies which allow the sun to counter some of its effects.
