Greece lies in the south-east of Europe, a virtual peninsula surrounded by the Mediterranean, Aegean and Ionian seas, flanked by a vast array of picturesque islands of all sizes. It has borders with Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and Turkey. The official language is Greek and the currency is the euro. Greece is a mountainous country with mild winters and hot summers, although the climate is more temperate in the north.

Culturally, the history and monuments of the ancient Greeks are a huge attraction, from the mighty Parthenon in Athens to bleached white island temples set against sparkling blue seas. This is the land of Greek philosophy, ancient Greek literature and Greek mythology. Greek folk music is ever-popular and underpins much of today's Greek music as well.

The islands of Greece are divided into several groups, including the Cyclades, the Sporades, the Aegean, the Dodecanese and the Ionian islands. The largest four islands are Crete, Euboea, Rhodes and Lesbos. Other islands which are individually well-known include Corfu, Zakynthos and Naxos. The islands are varied and some have come to be known for their particular attributes. Thus, Mykonos is known for its party atmosphere, Kefalonia for its peace and tranquility, Crete for its striking terrain, Santorini for its volcano and black sand and the Cyclades for their typical whitewashed houses and domed churches. Some islands have a highly developed tourist industry while it is still possible to escape the crowds on some of the smaller less well known islands.

Mainland Greece outside of the obvious major historic sites, is often overlooked and is more popular with the Greeks than international tourists. This is itself is reason enough to make it worth a visit; the beautiful scenery, mountains, interesting towns, castles and fortresses make it a must!

Food here is simple, fresh and Mediterranean, with much seafood, lamb and tomatoes. Dips such as tzatziki are common. International cuisine can also be found in major tourist areas. Greek wine is increasingly respected.

Most people fly to Greece and land in Athens or one of the more popular islands. It is also possible to arrive by boat, place, train or car. Once in Athens, many head straight for the ports of Piraeus or Rafina, from where it is possible to catch a ferry to many of the islands. There are many ferry companies and often the most fun way to get around is to hop on a non-tourist boat.

The array of accommodation in Greece is vast from luxury villas to small family run b&bs through apartments and hotels. Many establishments in Greece prefixing their name with 'Villa' are actually small collections of apartments.
