Grenada, also known as the Spice Island, was first a French colony before being ceded to the British in 1783. While the Official language of the island is English, Grenadian Creole is more widely used by the inhabitants. Some French influence remains in the place names and in particular in the style of cooking.
Grenada is a mountainous volcanic island with a lush interior of lakes and rainforest giving way to mangro groves behind the white sand beaches and coves of the coast. The Grenadian people are very friendly and easy going, giving the island a laid back atmosphere. Much of its tourism is in the southwest of the island around its capital St Georges which is generally accepted as one of the picturesque towns in the Caribbean. Sailing around Grenada and the smaller islands of the Grenadines to the north is a popular pastime as are watersports in general. On land you can enjoy the local West Indian cuisine which makes the most of the fagrances and heat of the local spices all to the accompaniment of Calypso music. Away from the coast you can enjoy views of the lush green valleys, mountains and waterfalls of the interior or visit the numerous spice plantations.
Although fairly underdeveloped in terms of large hotels, Grenada has plenty of accommodation to let in smaller guesthouses, self catering villas and apartments to suit most budgets.
Carriacou the next largest island to the north has no large hotels but a good supply of self catering villas. It is the epitomy of a lazy Caribeean island with stunning views of its neighbouring smaller islands set in a sea of azure. It is truly the place to relax during the day and enjoy a leisurely meal and drink in the evening in one of its local restaurants.
