Guadeloupe is an archipelago in the Leeward Islands comprising the islands of Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, La Désirade, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante. The two main islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre differ considerably in their geographic make up. Basse-Terre is a mountainous volcanic island with an active volcano while Grande-Terre is flatter with rolling hills and flat plains. There are plenty of beaches on both islands, but more the exotic white sand beaches can be found on Grande-Terre. The waves from the Atlantic crash down on the beaches on the northen and eastern coasts making them a good location for surfing while waters lapping those facing the Caribbean are calmer and slightly warmer.
Basse_Terre offers more than just beaches. You can hike through the rainforests of the interior where you can visit waterfalls and see an abundance of exotic plants and wildlife. A trip to the active volcano Soufrière is also a must.
There are plenty of restaurants on both islands where you can find a variety of cuisines although French and Creole dominate. Salsa and Guadeloupe's own dance music Zouk in many of the bars and bars and restaurants creates a lively atmosphere. Nightlife can be found on both islands in the larger towns and cities including a couple of casinos, but elsewhere it can be quiet at night during the week as the local inhabitants tend to go to bed early.
There is a full complement of both hotel and self catering accommodation in Guadeloupe from luxury villas and 5 star hotels to smaller and cheaper guesthouses and apartment rentals, so whatever your preference, you should be able to find a suitable place to stay.
Easily accessible from France via Paris otherwise most entry is via some of the neighbouring islands such as Antigua, Martinique or Trindad.
