Indonesia is a country in South East Asia. Comprising over 17000 islands, it spans the equator and is approximately 2000km north of Australia. Located on the edge of three tectonic plates, the country has a history of seismic and volcanic activity which has produced a fertile land of dramatic scenery. With their tropical climate the islands are heavily forested, supporting an abundance of exotic wildlife, including the famous Komodo Dragon found on the island of Komodo. The seas and coral reefs around Indonesia's vast coastline are home to over 3500 species of fish, making it a great diving destination. Surfing is also a very popular pastime, with some of the worlds best surfing beaches. For those looking for less active pastimes there are some superb beaches and beach resorts especially on the island of Bali.
The cultural and religious history of Indonesia have led to a diverse population with several hundred languages and dialects in use. While nowadays the country is predominately Muslim, Buddist and Hindu temples dating back to the 8th century can be found scattered throughout the islands including the spectacular Borobudur and Prambanan temples in central Java. This diverse culture is also reflected in the cuisine which varies by region with elements of Chinese, Indian and European and Middle Eastern influences. Rice is the core component and is grown in abundance in terraced paddy fields interspersed with coconut palms, creating a spectacular landscape of luminescent green. Rice is normally accompanied by side dishes of fish or chicken with spices and coconut milk.
With 6000 of the islands inhabited and with their own characteristics it is not possible in this short guide to describe the country in detail. However of these islands the most developed and visited tourist destination is Bali with its bars and restaurants, beaches and highlands. Lombok is a popular surfing destination and Java is home to the country's capital Jakarta and the site of its most spectacular temples. Kalimantan is a land of jungles and rivers and home of the orangutan, while Sulawesi is a first class diving destination.
