The Calabrian region forms what is generally known as the 'toe' of the boot of the Italian peninsula. Its only land border is with the region of Basilicata and it is mainly surrounded by sea, although it is separated from Sicily by only a narrow strait.

This is a very mountainous and hilly region with many lakes and forests in the centre. Lower lying agricultural land is home to small farms and olive groves. Much of the coastline is unspoilt, spectacular cliffs and coves interspersed with beaches. Tropea with its historic centre perched above the sea is probably the most notable resort here. The villages are quiet and the modern world can seem to have passed them by. The three Calabrian national parks - Pollino (the northern mountains, castles and archeological sites), Sila (plateau and forests) and Aspromonte (coastal mountains and forest) are well worth a visit. Finally, having been occupied by both the Greeks and the Romans, there are some interesting ruins in Calabria.

Despite the fact that it is very much an up-and-coming holiday destination, there are villa and apartment rentals to be found here, particularly by the sea and, given the nature of the terrain, some of them come wih spectacular views. It is also possible to find some places to stay inland such as traditional village houses and cottages.
