Florence is rated as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It lies on the Arno river in the centre of Italy surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. It is the largest city in Tuscany and the regional capital, a city of history and culture with many fine Renaissance buidings, museums and art galleries. Florence is probably best visited in the spring or autumn months as it can get very hot and humid during July and August. Florence is also a very busy city especially in the summer months so it is advisable to book your accommodation in advance and where possible pre-book your entrance to the attractions you want to see to avoid queuing. Most of the main attractions are concentrated into a few areas which makes it possible to visit them on foot. Alternatively the public bus service is good and relatively inexpensive.
There are very few free attractions in Florence so be prepared to pay entrance fees. Concessionary fees are available to EU citzens under 25 or over 65. Hotels can also be expensive so it's worth considering a rental apartment or smaller guesthouse or even a villa or farmhouse accommodation in the countryside within easy access of the city.
