The Liguria region is the thin coastal strip of land that runs in an arc around the north western edge of Italy from Tuscany to France. It also borders Piedmont and Emilia Romagna.

An area that is virtually all hilly and mountainous, Liguria is also known as the Italian Riviera, where, backed by lovely hills, colourful houses crowd up to the sea. Here, long beaches are interspersed with cliffs and coves. It is also home to Genoa, San Remo, Portofino and the Cinque Terra. Genoa is a marvelous historic city with an old port and narrow alleyways. San Remo is an elegant and historic casino town, also known for its flower production. Portofino is an upmarket marina town, popular with yacht owners and ideal for people-watching, shopping and relaxing. The Cinque Terra are 5 villages, world renowned for their beauty, which hang onto the cliffs over the sea. Inland, hills are covered with vineyards, olive trees and pine forests.

Liguria offers much in the way of places to stay, often in lovingly converted and renovated historic buildings. Local hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts can be quaint and provide an opportunity to sample some real Italian hospitality.
