Jamaica is one of the largest islands in the Caribbean, with an area of over 4,000 square miles. It achieved independence from Britain in 1962, but is still part of the British Commonwealth and has a large English-speaking population. The capital city of Jamaica is historical Kingston.
The most established resorts in Jamaica lie to the north and east of the country, boasting spectacular golf courses, fashionable shopping experiences and everything you could possibly want from a holiday in a first-class Caribbean resort, including of courses, beaches. Head to the south of the island for a more local experience where the tourist industry is more recently established and accommodation is likely to be more 'local'. Beaches range from classic exotic Caribbean stretches of fine sand to quiet sheltered coves. Inland, the Blue Mountains (Jamaica's highest and famous for their coffee) offer pine forests, cloud forests, rain forests and hiking.
Culturally, Jamaica's older cities offer much in the way of historic colonial buildings and, last but not least, this is of course the cultural home of reggae!
