The villa is situated in the peaceful suburban district of Eltham, near White River and only three miles from the center of the exciting tourist resort of Ocho Rios. Ocho Rios (often known as Ochi) is located in the 'Garden Parish' of St Ann's Jamaica, the parish name providing an indication of the nature of the area - lush, green and tropical. Originally a small fishing and banana port, it was specifically developed as a tourism area and tourism is now undoubtedly its main driver. The town abounds with craft markets, bars, restaurants and duty free shopping outlets. It is now one of Jamaica's most popular stop-offs for cruise ships, which can make it busy during the day, but the ships usually leave at night and rarely dock at weekends. Ocho Rios is lively although somewhat quieter than Montego Bay, less Jamaican than some resorts, but greener than others.
Ocho Rios is perhaps best known for the nearly Dunn's River Falls, a 180m high cascade of water which flows down through a series of steps and pools right onto the beach. It is possible to swim in the pools and even climb up the sides of the falls, taking care on the slippery rocks.
A popular destination is nearby Oracabessa, home to the famous James Bond Beach where Dr No was filmed. Ian Fleming also had his house Goldeneye in the area. Reggae Beach is also a popular venue and turtles swim in the waters here.
Notable locals also include Bob Marley, who was born in nearby Nine Mile village, where his grave can also be found. Writer Noel Coward had his house Firefly near to Ocho Rios and the house can now be toured. He wrote many of his plays here and is buried in the grounds.
Other activities include everything you might expect in a Caribbean resort town plus deep sea fishing, horse riding, rafting and plantation visits. Dolphin's Cove provides the opportunity to swim with bottle nosed dolphins, while Green Grotto Caves are a wonderworld of limestone stalactites and stalagmites.
Places to stay in Ocho Rios range from apartments sleeping couples to villas for large groups. Being by the sea, much of the accommodation comes with sea views. It is also possible to find more unusual rental options such as accommodation on working farms and plantations.
