It is easy to think of Malta as an island, but it is in fact a group of islands, the two largest in the archipelago being Malta and Gozo. A third island, Comino, is inhabited, while the remaining islands are uninhabited. Malta is tiny and has a population of under half a million, the majority of which reside in the island of Malta. It is part of the EU and uses the euro. The official language is Maltese (a language with Arabic, Sicilian and Italian roots) and English is the second official language.

As one of the southern-most countries in Europe, Malta enjoys a climate approaching that of northern Africa. Daytime temperatures in summer are generally 28-30 C while winter daytime temperatures are 12-20 C. Summer lasts an amazing 8 months!

Occupying a strategic position between southern Europe and North Africa, Malta has been the subject of many invasions and its culture and architecture are a vibrant mix of the influences brought along by each occupying power. Places to visit include Valletta, the capital, the ancient and fantastically preserved city of Mdina, Rabat with its catacombs, the temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, Mellieha and its beautiful beaches, and the Blue Grotto. While Malta is the most visited island (the south of the island is much less visited however), Gozo is quieter and less populated and Comino is scarcely populated at all.

Food in Malta is typically Mediterranean and simple, but international tastes are very much catered for. Accommodation is also typically Mediterranean - apartments in the towns, hotels and villas by the coast, renovated character properties inland and also in towns. Gozo generally is home to rural properties, while Comino has a few bungalows and an all inclusive hotel. Some bed and breakfasts are also available on the islands of Gozo and Malta.
