For many people, the Algarve is synonymous with Portugal when it comes to holidays. This is a lovely region of golden sandy beaches, separated by spectacular sandstone cliffs, set againt a backdrop of sparkling blue sea. Coming to the tourist industry somewhat later than neighbouring Costa del Sol, it has largely escaped the excesses of high-rise development and the coast is largely flanked by villas and low-rise apartment blocks and urbanisations.
In general, the more up-market areas of the region, such as Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo lie closest to Faro, the region's only airport. Move further away from Faro and the amount of development declines gradually. For a complete retreat from the Alarve's bustle, head for the beaches on the western coast. Here you wil find little else than dramatic headlands and unspoit stretches of sand - few people, few buildings, just complete escape. Head east away from Faro to places such as Tavira and development has commenced only recently.
Inland there are some pretty, peaceful towns, Silves being an example or the mountain retreat of Monchique, further inland and further west.
Accommodation options for places to stay are endless here - hundreds of privately owned villas and apartments to let, some luxury and frontline, some more affordable. There are numerous small and large hotels, and rural bed and breakfasts can be found inland, along with cottages and village houses.
