Setubal town lies approximately 40km to the south of Lisbon and is the capital of the Setubal district. It sits on the northern shore of the Sado river estuary, which is inhabited by a colony of dolphins. The quaint car ferry across the river to Troia provides a direct link to southern Portugal and can save many miles of travel. Once an important sardine fishing centre, Setubal still retains a bustling port and many good priced fish restaurants, with the local dish being cephalopodo (deep fried cuttlefish). Setubal is vibrant yet elegant and is well worth a visit.
Nearby, on the road to Sesimbra, is the unspoilt Arrabida national park, which has some beautiful scenery and fine beaches. Inland from Setubal is the Sado Estuary Reserva Natural, wit its mud flats, lagoons and pine forests.
The area is good for golf courses, with Quinta do Peru, Troia across the river and Aroeira, which is considered one of the best in the country.
