Barcelona lies on the shores of the Mediterranean in the North East of Spain. It is the second largest city after Madrid and the capital of the region of Catalonia. It is a modern, young, vibrant city with much to do and see including its historic Gothic quarter in the centre of the city. Architecturally Barcelona is best known for the works of Antoni Gaudi who is best depicted by the Sagrada Familia temple he started and which is still under construction today and the buildings and sculptures he influenced in the Park Guell. The city is split into 10 districts. The Exiampler district is good for shopping, bars, restaurants and is where the Sagrada Familia can be found. The Gothic Quarter is a maze of cobbled streets with good restaurants and interesting bars. For a more comprehensive list of districts and their individual characters visit
Website . Running from from the city to the port is Barcelona's most famous street, Las Ramblas which is a hive of activity with its markets, flower stalls and street theatres. At the end of Las Ramblas you will find the busy port with it cruise ship terminal. North of the port are some of Barcelona's closest beaches and the new modern olympic port and marina with its many bars and restaurants.
Flats and apartments are obviously the ideal places to stay for a self catering holiday of short break in Barcelona city itself, but this is also a seaside and beach location, so private villas and casas with pools can be found outside the city but within easy striking distance of it. Bed and breakfast or hotel / guesthouse rooms are also an option.
