The Canary Islands are a group of Spanish islands lying off the north western coast of Africa, considerably further south than the rest of Spain. They include the islands of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Altough part of Europe, the islands' location means that they have a semi-tropical climate, making them ideal holiday destinations, even into the European winter. All the islands are volcanic in origin (some still have active volcanoes) and are renowned for their natural beauty.
Each of the islands has its own special geography and characteristics and they are best dealt with separately. In general however: Tenerife and Cran Canaria are the most visitedand oldest in terms of tourism. Lanzarote has been developed omewhat more recently and therefore in a less high-rise fashion. Fuertventura is popular for its beaches and watersports. La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro are much les developed.
It is easy to get to and around the Canary Islands, with major airports and ferry ports providing gateways in and a good road network facilitating transport around the islands.
Places to stay in the Canary Islands very much follow the usual southern European pattern, with holiday apartments and luxury villas to let by the coast, often on complexes. It is also posible to find bungalows to hire here. If you head inland or to the mountains and more rustic areas, you can find more traditional characterful houses and the so-called casa rural or rural house.
