Cantabria is a small region in north-western Spain, bordered by the Basque Country to the east, Asturias to the East, Castile-Leon to the south and the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic Ocean to the north.

Similarly to the surrounding regions, this is fairly off-the-beaten-track territory as far as Spanish tourism is concerned, but a visit here can be highly rewarding, particularly if you are looking for something different. The coastline is wild and the scenery spectacular. The region shares the Los Picos de Europa National Park with neighbouring Asturias and Castile and Leon, so the mountains are magnificent. Like its neighbours, Cantabria is part of Green Spain, so it is lush and verdant, although this is also an indication of local weather patterns!

The capital of the region is Santander, widely known for being the main ferry port of northern Spain, but also a lovely city in its own right, with beaches and a small historic centre.

Accommodation to let in Cantabria is largely rustic - stone cottages, farmhouses and counry guesthouses feature widely. It is also possible to find historic properties in the mountains. Places to stay on the coast of Cantabria will also include typical seaide apartments and the occasional villa.
