Galicia is the western-most region of northern Spain. Bordering Asturias, Castile and Leon and Portugal, with a coast on the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay, it completes the set of regions known as 'Green Spain'.
The landscape here consists of gentle mountains inland and rugged inlets and headlands around the wild coast with its spectacular bays. This is a fairly wet and cool region, its lower temperatures making it popular in the height of the summer. Places to see include Santiago de Compostela with its massive medieval area and fantastic cathedral and Lugo with its Roman Wall and cathedral.
As well as Spanish, Galician is spoken in this region and is becoming more popular, although it is spoken very much as a second language.
Country guesthouses and b&bs make great places to stay in Galicia. There are also self catering villas to let, apartments in the historic towns and cities and on the coast and country cottages and farmhouses inland. If it's something unusual you are looking for, you might also find the occasional manor house or converted watermill.
