St Martin/Sint Maarten lies in the NE of the Caribbean and is the smallest island to have ever been shared by two nations. The Northern half of the island St Martin is an administrative division of France while Sint Maarten in the South is one of the countries that make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
This is an island of white sand beaches cooled by the trade winds and enjoying a year round temperature that varies little from 28 Celcius. All the watersports you can think of are available here, including Scuba diving snorkeling, parasailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, kayaking and sailing. Horse riding, mountain biking and hiking are also popular.
Both halves of the island reflected their cultural heritage, with the French halve exuding elegance with luxury hotels and fashionable shops, while the Dutch half is slightly more relaxed despite being the more developed. English is widely spoken throughout the island and US dollars and credit cards are widely accepted. The official currency of St Martin is the Euro while that of the Dutch side is the Antilles Netherland Guilder. Access between the two halves of the island is virtually unrestricted.
The island has numerous restaurants, catering for all budgets from the very expensive to the affordable. The French side offers mainly European cuisines especially French and Italian while in Sint Maarten you can also find a good selection of Asian cuisines such Indian, Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese restaurants.
For places to stay, the island offers a full range of self catering accommodation from luxury villas to smaller apartments and studios.
There are direct flights from France and the US but most European flights are via one of the nearby Caribbean islands.
