Trinidad and Tobago is an English speaking republic in the Caribbean off the NE coast of Venezuela. It comprises the islands of Trinidad and Tobago along with numerous other much smaller islands. While tourism is important the main source of income comes from the oil and gas reserves which have been developed industrially. In this respect Trinidad is far more developed than Tobago, which is also less than a tenth of its size.

Being less dependent on tourism than most Caribbean islands, Trinidad & Tobago offer the independent traveler a less commercialised form of Caribbean holiday.

On Tobago you can still find stretches of palm lined white sand beaches with little or no facilities where you can take a picnic and spend a day away from the crowds relaxing in the sun. Here you can hear the sounds of colourful parrots in the rainforest behind or snorkel amongst colourful coral and fish in crystal clear water. This is not to say all Tobago's beaches are like this. If you prefer to spend your day lazing on your preprepared sun bed being served your favourite cocktail or participating in the numerous water sports on offer, there are plenty of beaches offering these facilities. Often these beaches are attached to large hotels and there may be a small fee.

For the nature enthusiast both islands are abundant in wild life with over 400 species of colourful birds including parrots, hummingbirds and woodpeckers. There are also numerous lizards, frogs, mammals, non poisonous snakes and species of turtle, including the giant leather back turtles which come ashore on Tobago's beaches between March and July to lay their eggs.

Trinidad, the more lively of the two islands with its night clubs, bars and street carnivals, also has plenty of unexploited beaches, but is probably better known for the colourful wildlife that inhabit its rainforests and wetlands.

Both islands have a plenty of restaurants to suit all budgets, ranging from quite cheap to reasonably expensive. More Traditional western cuisine can be found in the more expensive hotel restaurants while local dishes of fish and chicken with coconut and other island spices can be found in local restaurants. Hot spicy dishes are also very popular.

Places to stay on Trinidad tend to be based more on hotels and small guesthouses while on Tobago there is a good selection of self catering villas.
