Within 10 – 20 minute walk of the Manoir
Notre Dame de Lorette:
A local walk up to a small beauty spot with picnic area where you will find a picturesque church, very ornately decorated inside and the “fountain de Lorette” a natural spring said to have special healing properties for the ears. Walk up to the end of the lane leading to the Manoir, turn right at the top, continue on past the farm and up the hill, where the lane bears to the right take the left up the track through the forest, church to be found at the top of this track. Once there if you continue straight on through the forest walkway towards the road, just across the road is the “fountain”
Within 15 – 20 minutes drive of the Manoir:
Loudeac:
A traditional town with a lively atmosphere
The mediaeval town of Loudeac in the Côtes D’Armor department is a very pretty market town with many traditional buildings and mediaeval streets to enjoy. There are excellent restaurants, cafés and shops, with plenty of banks and supermarkets for the practicalities of everyday life. Breton gastronomy is famous for its buckwheat pancakes, or ‘crêpes’ and you should certainly try these while in Loudeac, washed down with a bolée of cider. (The Bretons enjoy their cider and the bolée, which looks like a small handleless cup, is the traditional way to drink it.)
Mur de Bretagne:
Smaller than Loudeac, again plenty of banks, shops and restaurants, child’s play area and crazy golf by the Mayor’s office. Thematique is a child friendly internet café/ library for those wet days. They also have toys for small children.
Quintin:
Designated a ‘Small City of Character’. There is a 17th century chateau and picturesque lake with a walk and a childs play area. Some decent restaurants and creperies.
Lac de Guerledan:
This magnificent lake is 12km long and has man made beaches restaurants, bars, boat trips, pedalo/ canoe/ motor boat hire, fishing, walks all around the perimeter. Of the numerous resorts Beau Rivage is popular as in addition to the man made beach and watersports, there is a restaurant, a creperie, and a bar all on the banks of the lake. Boat trips can also be taken from here. We recommend the Creperie run by Phillipe.
There are also numerous other points to visit and explore on the lake, we suggest driving around following signs for the lake from Mur de Bretagne . There are also wonderful walks on the south side of the lake where the Forest of Quenecan begins.
Abbaye de Bon Repos:
Here you can visit the Abbaye, walk along the canal, take a boat trip along the canal, or walk into the forest. There are restaurants also and a Sunday morning market.
Pontivy:
Definitely worth a visit. There is the ‘Chateau de Rohan’ to visit, a high St with decent shopping, an ‘old town ‘cobbled street off of which is another one of our recommended restaurants ‘Le Marmit’. The other restaurant that we recommend is the Auburge, being on the banks of the Nantes –Brest Canal, which you can reach by following the canal as you enter Pontivy and crossing by the bridge at the main square car park, and coming back on yourself until you reach the restaurant.
The car park also hosts the market on Mondays.
St Brieuc:
Is the regional capital, and as you reach the first major roundabout in St. Brieuc there is a retail park on the right which hosts a cinema, bowling, and a ball park/ activity centre for young children.
If serious retail therapy is required, St. Brieuc offers the huge Carrefour Centre with multiple retail outlets or the Boutique experience of the old town with over 120 specialist outlets. There are large superstores on the outskirts. The City centre and port areas are quite nice.
There are many beautiful beaches and coastlines to visit both to the east and west along the coast from St Brieuc. Binic is very nice, just north of St Brieuc about 40 mins drive
Within 1 hours Drive:
Dinan:
A must visit destination. Why not visit on market day (Thursday). Park in the medieval town centre and visit the Fortress, wander around the cobbled streets and take the cobbled road down to the Port area where the River Rance is crossed by the viaduct. There are bars and restaurants at portside, and if you cross the river by the bridge and turn right along the river path under the viaduct, there is a pleasant 25 min walk to the petit city of character Lehon. There is an abbey, restaurant (Le Marmit: recommended) or tea served by Chris and Dennis at the Riverside B&B. In Dinan we recommend the ‘Creperie Ana’.
Vannes:
To the south, on the coat, there are many beaches to visit within this region
A little further:
St Malo:
For the beaches, the walled city and the shops. Worth spending your final hours here before boarding the ferry. Good seafood restaurants.
