Tranquil rural gite in the heart of the Limousin - a perfect hideaway!
Nestled into the landscape, this high-quality gite offers accommodation ideal for 2-4 people in Villemonteix - gateway to the Monts et Barrages & the Millevaches Regional Park in Limousin.
The building (originally a piggery and bread oven) has kept its character (but the pigs have been evicted!) with wood beams & stone walls mixed with the comfort of modern conveniences to provide a comfortable retreat from the pressures of modern life.
Accommodation: Self Catering |
Rates: €315.00 - €455.00 per property per week
The Property
The accommodation comprises one bedroom (double bed) with radio/CD player, bathroom (with a large shower cabin), and an open-plan sitting-room/kitchen. A comfortable sofa-bed (double) provides the sleeping arrangement for the third and fourth guests. The kitchen is fitted with a quality cooker, microwave and washing machine. A TV (English Freesat) and a DVD player are provided (with a selection of DVDs) and access to the owners book library is given for the duration of your stay.
Although there are steps to the entrance, once inside all the accommodation is on one level.
Please be aware that in order for any additional guests sleeping on the sofa bed to get to the bathroom it is necessary to pass through the bedroom.
The gite is available for rent all year, and if you decide to come and experience the Limousin in low or mid-season we can assure your warmth and comfort. The bathroom is equipped with an electric heater that fills the room with warm air in a very short time. The main body of the gite is heated by means of a wood burner in the sitting room. A daily allowance of wood is included in the tariff during the appropriate seasons. We also provide an electric blanket for the bed!
Outside there is a small private garden area with terrace, seating and barbeque situated to make the most of daylong sunshine (sunshine not guaranteed, of course - but we'll put in a request!!), and an 'above ground' swimming pool (approximately 24 x 12 foot) next to the terrace is also available for the exclusive use of our guests.
The overall property is set in a private garden of over an acre which includes a small vegetable garden, and produce will be available to guests depending on the season and how successful we are with the veggies and fruit! Our own corn-fed chickens will be happy to provide your breakfast eggs for a small charge!

***
The Limousin is a region of beauty and tranquillity. From pasture land & forests to magnificent lakes & rivers there is little that the region does not offer in the way of places to relax or to experience something a little more energetic! The landscape lends itself to many countryside pastimes such as horse riding, hiking, mushroom hunting & water sports.
Only 5 minutes away is the Lac de St Helene with a small well-kept beach from which to swim. A separate area of the lake is for water skiing.
It is a perfect place for artists and art-lovers with a rich history in not only the porcelain & enamelling but also tapestries, weaving & stained glass making.
Lac de Vassiviere (40 mins) offers beaches, swimming, canoeing, & water skiing, an island with a chateau & gardens housing sculptures & a small menagerie of animals & an exhibition centre hosting art shows.
Also near to the lake is a great place to spend some adrenalin time! Arbre en Arbre is a fantastic place to practice Tarzan impressions! From easy green runs to the scary 'black run' there is something for the biggest scaredy cat to real adrenalin junkies!
The local medieval town of St Leonard de Noblat is on the route to Compostella & the emblematic shell of St Jaques can be found set into the roads and pavements of its streets.
The capital of the region Limoges (35 mins) has a host of attractions – museums, porcelain factories, markets, cathedral & churches, gardens, bowling, golf, restaurants... the list goes on!
The martyrs village of Oradur-sur-Glane is about an hour away where the remnants of the village have been left as a reminder of the war - a memorial has been built with a visitors centre showing artefacts from the old town with photographs & films telling the story of the victims & the handful of survivors.
Villemonteix is at the gateway to the Monts & Barrages natural park, & a visit to the Plateau de Millevaches & the volcanic region of the Massif Central is a must.

We are able to accept payment by Paypal in currencies other than Euros and Sterling, but a small additional fee is made to cover charges.
A security deposit of 120 Euros or £100 is payable on arrival and refunded at the end of the stay.
The first set of bed linen and towels (per week) are included in the weekly tariff - additional sets are available at a weekly charge of 15 Euros.
We can offer an upgrade for guests 3 and 4 to a double room in the house with shared bathroom if you would find it more convenient. The room has independent access from outside and is available at a cost of 10 Euros per night. You can reserve this option and decide when you get here if it is suitable!
If you are looking for more than just a relaxing place to stay then we can arrange various courses with local people, from painting through photography to Tai chi. If you have any other ideas then we will try to source an expert!
Photography
The owner, Chris, was a professional photographer for over 12 years back in England. In 1994 he won the prestigious Professional Photographer of the Year competition. Since then he has worked for many magazines including Super Twins, Collect it!, 100% Biker, American-V, & Antiques & Heritage Lifestyle. In addition he was the in-house photographer for KP Foods & MacVities (yes we do miss the free samples!).
Whether you are using film or digital equipment, whether you are a beginner or looking to improve the quality of your results we can tailor a course to meet your needs. Choose mornings, afternoons or full day & the subjects you would like to cover & leave the rest to us!
A full studio set-up with several professional flash units & backdrops are available for portraiture or still life images.
Charges:- Half day 20 Euros Full day 35 Euros
Tai-Chi
Chris is also in charge of the tai-chi courses! Having studied the art for over 20 years he is qualified to offer a number of interesting possibilities! For a complete beginner the short form may take too long to completely learn in a week, but there would certainly be enough time for a very good introduction to the art. For more experienced practitioners he is able to offer courses in sword form & the truly elegant fan form.
Charges: Hourly rate 5 Euros per person
Taxi service
It can be frustrating to go to a restaurant for the evening & know that one of you is going to have to drive home so someone has to miss out on enjoying the excellent bottle of red you've just ordered! No problem - we will drive you there & get the owner to call when you're ready to be collected!
Charges: Cheissoux - one free trip per week, 5 Euros per extra trip - St Leonard de Noblat - 10 Euros
Bikers
Having been into biking ourselves for about30 years we like to think that we know a bit about what bikers like - we will make you very welcome! Bikes can be parked undercover in the barn. The roads in this region are superb for bikes - the French have a very different attitude to bikes that makes for a very pleasant experience! We can either offer advice on 'best routes' or, if you prefer we can accompany you on ride-outs tailored to your preferences. We can also offer a picnic service - we will turn up at an appropriate time & place, lay out the goodies & all you have to do is turn up and enjoy!
Charges depending on picnic menu.
Gaming
No, we're not referring to an in-house casino! But we do have rather a lot of games like Carcassonne (with pretty much ALL the expansions), Valley of the Mammoths, Ra, Trans-Europe Express, and of course our all time favourite Catan (Settlers) with absolutely ALL the expansions. So if you're into gaming you can borrow any game we have in stock - with very little persuasion we are happy to drop almost anything we're doing to join you!
No charge !!
Push biking
We have two pushbikes available - one ladies & one gents. They are road bikes rather than off-road, but with remarkably courteous drivers on the roads, riding around this beautiful area is a real pleasure! Remember though, that this is hilly country not Holland so be prepared to work!
No charge !!
Naturism
Not necessarily at the gite (although it is entirely up to you, of course!) but we have a local naturist campsite & we've been given permission for our guests to spend the day at the site (free of charge).
