Pitsidia sits on the wertern edge of the Messara Plain, just off the road from Matala to Heraklion. The road by-passes the village so it is easily missed. It is the oldest village in the area. The village square is surrounded by tavernas. (See more details in Additional information below). The beach at Kommos is only 1Km. and can be reached in 5 minutes by car or 25 minutes easy stroll through olive groves and vineyards.
Matala is only 5 Km. And has its own beach, tavernas and music bars. (Again see below). Once regarded as the best resort beach in Crete, it is famous for the caves that are cut into the cliffs. Ideal for family bathing and also stupendous sunsets. The market towns of Mires and Tymbaki are only 8Km.
The Messara region offers the discerning holiday traveller a wonderful part of Crete away from the busy north of the island. The area is traditionally ‘Cretan’ despite the expanse of tourism and for those looking for ‘real’ Crete, this region provides a wide range of experiences.
The people are exceptionally warm, welcoming and hospitable.
The region is located in the centre of the south of the island with its west facing stunning golden beaches, which offer safe bathing and spectacular sunsets. It is rich in archaeology and Cretan culture including the Minoan palaces of Phaistos, Agia Triada and also the ancient city of Gortyn.
The tourist season extends to November because of the long summer weather (300 days ave. of sun annually).

There are plenty of tavernas to choose from in Pitsidia Village: Bodikos – homemade pizzas and traditional cretan cuisine, Mikes – exceptional local cuisine and The Meeting Place in the platia (square) – traditional cretan cuisine.
Matala has two supermarkets, an everyday stall market, many shops selling jewellery, clothes, leather products, books, pottery and souvenirs. There are numerous tavernas and bars some with live music. Some recommended tavernas are: Giannis and Korali in the town square, Eleni on the beach front – excellent fresh calamari and the Sunset Taverna on the left cliff – fantastic fish and seafood.
Local delicacies are local fish and seafood and the Mystical View overlooking Kommos beach and Messara Bay must be one of the best. There are also speciality Rabbit tavernas in Agia Ioannis and other surrounding villages that serve this cuisine.
Be sure to visit the little church cut into the rock, the caves cut into the cliffs and if you’re energetic, take the trek over the hill to Red Beach for some ‘au-natural’ sun bathing.
For archaeological expeditions go to the Minoan Palaces at Phaistos and Agia Triada - 4 Km. and the newly found excavations of the port of Kommos - right behind the beach - 1Km. Further afield is the ancient city of Gortyn - 15Km back along the road to Heraklion.
If you're feeling really fit, try one of the spectacular gorge walks. (See owners website - "Walking & Rambling")
