The Property
The cottage dates from the 18th Century and has been restored to provide modern comfort, yet retain the traditional feeling of the property. The impressive stone wall has been uncovered and the beams, which had been untouched for several hundred years, now flaunt their gorgeous grains. The cottage is availabe all year round and has a wood burning stove for the cooler months as well as full central heating. The terrace immediately outside the cottage provides a private, tranquil area for relaxing. It is west facing and an ideal afternoon sun trap. The built-in BBQ is exclusively for your use, together with a pleasant sitting area. There is another terrace, also solely for your use which, in summer, is well shaded by a fig tree.
The ground floor now provides a light and airy open plan living space. There's a TV providing both French and English language channels, a DVD player and CD player. Internet is available from your own laptop and our WiFi connection. The wood burning stove is surrouned by a sofa and two armchairs together with three small coffee tables and a bookcase.
The dining area has a table and six chairs, a dresser stocked with plenty of cockery and looks out onto the terrace through french doors. The kitchen offers a hob, oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, micro wave and is well equipped for cooking. It completes the convivial atmosphere of this open plan living area.

*** We're 20kms from Carcassonne for airport, rail and motorway links and its fairytale medieval Cité, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Toulouse (the 'Pink City'), also with an airport, is about an hour's drive northwards as are the towns of Narbonne and Beziers (with an airport) and the beaches of the mediterranean to the South. The towns of Perpignan and Montpellier are about a 90 minute drive and both have airports and the nearest ski stations are also about the same distance from us. And if you wish to spread your wings even further, you can drive to Andorra or Spain in about two hours!
Closer to home, there are many delightful towns to explore. Limoux sits astride the river Aude and is home to the sparkling wine 'Blanquette de Limoux' and winter Carnival; from January to March, the longest in the world! Castelnaudary proudly celebrates its famous 'Cassoulet' dish every August and its picturesque 'Bassin' provides a popular mooring point on the Canal du Midi, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the bastide town of Mirepoix sports its grisly medieval gargoyles and excellent Monday market in the main square.
This part of the Languedoc region has a sunny Mediterranean climate and offers something for everyone; miles of long sandy beaches on which to while away your holiday, stunning hilltop Cathare forteresses where you can discover this dynamic period of French history and a multitude of year round activities and sports to try out.

The village of Cailhavel provides a peaceful, rural setting for your holiday. However, it is very centrally placed to provide excellent access by car to all the sight-seeing highlights in this lovely region.
To help you with your daily needs, the baker from our neighbouring village of Cailhau delivers bread, etc, to our village every day except Mondays. Weekly mobile delivery vans also bring groceries, meat and fish. Several small supermarkets are less than a 10 minute drive away in Montréal and Belveze du Razes and also pharmacies, newsagents, post offices, butchers, bakeries, bars, etc. Larger supermarkets and shops can be found in Carcassonne, Limoux and Castelnaudary. The various weekly markets nearby also offer an abundance of fresh produce as well as many other stalls.
Within a short drive of the village, there are numerous restaurants, auberges, brasseries and bars and our local bakery offers an evening take-away pizza service. A varied choice of eateries is also available throughout the year in all our local towns. In addition, local wines and other regional produce can be purchased very reasonably at our many nearby Domaines and Caves.
There's an outdoor swimming pool complex in Montréal open during July and August and all the local towns mentioned provide year round indoor/outdoor complexes.
