The Property
Casa Chica is on the edge of the village and looks towards the spectacular Lujar mountain and Sierra Contraveisa. The Rio Chico runs from the high Sierra Nevada towards Orgiva, the local bustling market town, and down a steep and impressive gorge to the sea. Here on one of the terraces, you can enjoy al fresco dining. Or maybe relax on the sunloungers listening to the goat herd passing, and village life, and enjoy the shade of the vine and the scent of orange blossom. Being up in the mountains, it is comforting to know in the winter months it is lovely and cosy with central heating and a wood burning stove. There is a sheltered balcony to enjoy breakfast or a siesta. It is a very versatile casita, the living area being open plan and yet designed with a feeling of indiviual rooms. The interior decor is very attractive wherever you look with rugs, paintings, ceramics, alcoves and tiles, and terracotta floors. Many Alpujarran houses are dark, built into a cliff side, but Casa Chica has a lot of windows and is light and airy. In the village is one of the oldest churches in La Alpujarra, and also riding stables. There are wonderful walks and excellent guide books of the local area exploring the ancient mule tracks and wonderful pueblos blancos (white villages) or this unspoilt corner of Andalucia. You can walk down to Orgiva down the side of the Rio Chico or along an exciting high ridge. There is a fascinating walk through olive and almond groves, through a ruined village to Carataunas where there is a bar restaurant.

We have modular dining tables that can be used individually or put together to make intimate or group dining feel comfortable. The casa has been used with a toddler living in the main part of the house, but the downstairs bedroom is down steep outside steps so is not suitable for small children required to sleep down in the bottom room. There are ruins next to the property but we have put up gates to ensure small children cannot roam. Likewise the versatility is in the dining seating which have futon mattresses on that can be used at full length beds, and also a sofa bed in the sitting room. We do have a laptop out there but we have never discovered how it plays DVD's yet. We are not connected to the internet but there are internet cafes in Orgiva. On cleaning, we ask that you leave it clean and tidy or pay someone in the village to do it for you.
***
Casa Chica is situated in a hamlet in the foot hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, called La Alpujarra, a 10 minute drive or 25 minute walk from Orgiva, a bustling market town. Close to all the traditional white villages such as Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira(pueblos blancos) selling Alpujarran crafts and Serrano jamon and wines from La Contraveisa, and with a good variety of restaurants. This is the gateway to the high Sierra and extreme sports, and the highest mountain in Spain - Mulhacen. A bus goes from Capileira to a point where you can ascend a well trodden path and there is a refuge high up the mountain. For skiing though, you have to drive via Granada to the ski Sierra Nevade Ski resort which takes an 1 1/2 hours. It is really excellent and you can get day passes and hire all the gear. Granada and the magnificent and not-to-be-missed Alhambra Palace is 60 km - 1 hour away. Granada is a wonderful city with an old quarter - the Albaycin's cobbled streets filled with souk-like shops and wonderful tapas bars. The Costa Tropical coast is 40 minutes drive, Salobrena being the nearest nicest beach with lots of chiringuitas (beach cafes) and La Herradura is 1 hr away, Nerja 1 hr 10. In between Salobrena and Nerja are National Park beaches which you have to walk down to, with lovely unspoilt beaches. Almeria and the Spaghetti western film sets are about 1hr 15 mins away. Near by there is Yoga down the Rio Chica near Orgiva, and riding stables in Bayacas. Wonderful walks down ancient mule tracks in every direction.

When you book we can send additional information, directions, recommendations for car hire and flights and suggestions for eating out, and favourite walks.Wildlife, flora and fauna The Sierra Nevada is particularly rich in wild flowers - some fifty varieties are unique to these mountains. Wildlife such as the Cabra Hispanica - a wild horned goat, roam the mountains. The colourful hoopoe bird is a common sight. Lynx are rare to see but are still there. The fertile land abounds with oranges, chestnuts, bananas, apples and avocados. High Peaks Traverse:The route from Capileira to Mulhacen (3481m) is a good 25 km but the bus takes you half way there - it is the highest motorable pass in Europe, and Trevelez (famous for its hams) one of the white Peublos, is the highest habitable village in Europe. It takes 6 hrs to ascend from there The classic Ruta Integralde los Tres Mil is a complete traverse of all the Sierra's peaks over 3000m high - a 3-4 day itinery. Granada CityIf you only see one town in Spain it should be Granada - and particularly the Alhambra Palace says the Rough Guide - "the most exciting, sensual and romantic of all European monuments", with the breathtaking backdrop of the '"eternal snows" of the high Sierras - unmissable. Lanjaron Spa Town (a 20 min drive from Orgiva) is famous for the curative powers of its waters, sold in bottled form throughout Spain. The spa baths are open from June to October and there is a Moorish Castle, marking the town's medieval status as gateway to La Alpujarra. Horseriding above Lanjaron is spectacular with simulataneous views of the Meditarranean and the snowy peaks of the High Sierras. The Poqueira Gorge The Rio Poqueira which starts near the peak of Mulhacen, cuts its way dramatically through the terraces and woods dotted with little fincas (stone farmhouses). It is famous walking territory.A delightful reminder of bygone days, in Bayacas they still use mules and the farming is very traditional. Culture
Yengen, a village further afield was the home of Gerald Brenan who wrote South From Granada. Frederico Garcia Lorca, famous Spanish Poet who was executed in the Spanish Civil War, visited La Alpujarra and famously stayed in a cave close to Bayacas. His summer house in Granada in Puerta San Vincente can be visited and hosts exhibitions. Chris Stewart (Driving Over Lemons) lives in the adjacent valley.
