The Property
Zayetta 54 with indoor access to the luxury Hotel Alex is perfect family apartment; a paradise for walkers & skiers in both summer & winter.
Visit the charming, simple or sophisticated restaurants dotted over the mountain sides where skiers & walkers can meet up to enjoy both traditional Swiss cuisine & more innovative dishes.
In town, explore glamorous shops alongside old mountain huts in this picturesque car free village, or sunbath with a hot chocolate watching the skaters or your children playing on the climbing frame complex.
Silent electric vehicles or horse drawn sleighs are the taxis in this idyllic world where even bicycles are not allowed to disturb the joy of a stroll down the unchanged traditional main street, lending an intimacy and enchantment reminiscent of yesteryear. Bikers must circle round Zermatt before attempting the many challenging specially designated mountain bike trails!
In Summer apart from, the skiing, tennis & mountain biking, there are 400 km of well marked footpaths through pine-scented mountain forests & past Alpine lakes. You can even scuba dive under the glacier!
Skiers, please note that Zermatt has more snow making machines than any other resort in Europe. There are 313 km of runs of all standards to choose from, & once back in town, there are many spas to rejuvenate those weary limbs.
Surrounded by 38 of Europe's 76 four-thousand-metre peaks at the foot of the Matterhorn in the south of Switzerland, Zermatt is connected to the ski area of Cervinia in Italy via Testa Grigia (3,480m) leaving from the top of the Klein-Matterhorn cable car where you have a magnificent view of the highest mountain in Europe, Mont Blanc (4,807), which lies just across the French/Italian border. The hightest peak in Switzerland is here too, the Monte Rosa with its Dufourspitze peak (4,634m).
Finally be sure not to miss the new excellently presented Zermatt museum.

*** Zermatt has something to appeal to all tastes and ages. From gastronomic adventurers to exploring the quaint, cobbled streets among traditional rustic chalets & old wooden barns - where animals living below once provided central heating for Zermatt's farmers! All - in the very centre of this world famous resort & without the pollution of cars.
Concerts are held in the Catholic Church in the centre of Zermatt as well as up the mountain at the highly luxurious Riflealp Resort Hotel when the Gornergrat train is specially laid on.
Journeys by train or car around the Valais area are full of spectacular views and vistas, particularly spectacular is the Zermatt to St Moritz Glacier Express.
In the Summer, apart from hiking, skiing, tennis, exploring the Alpine lakes & incredible variety of flowers, you can stay in remote mountain huts which have recently become much more comfortable - literally on top of the world!
Thanks to Zermatt’s high altitude and glaciers, the Summer skiing attracts national training teams, though the pistes are of course open to all.
The spectacular tour (with a mountain guide) of the 'Gorge' takes you down a deep ravine, where you spring with fixed ropes from one side to the other - yet always feeling secure! Another adventure, is the 'Klettersteig' where you climb vertical rock faces while securing yourself to fixed pitons - even if you have never climbed before! And if you are lucky, the haunting Swiss horns will serenade you on your return. If this does not appeal, a ten minute train down to Tasch will take you to the Matterhorn Golf Club.
Other winter attractions include: cross-country skiing, ski touring (the official Haute Route goes from Saas Fee to Zermatt to Chamonix), tobogganing, ice climbing, skating, curling & heli-skiing (or heli-sight- seeing) with Air Zermatt's hightly experienced pilots. You can even visit an igloo, & you should not miss the ice schulpture museum at the top of the Klein-Matterhorn.

From the spacious entry hall of the Zayetta building there is immediate entry to the luxury Hotel Alex with its beautiful dinning room where dinner is a real treat - an expensive gastronomic adventure! But generallys, the real bonus is the wonderfully atmospheric bar and cosy secluded sitting areas designed round various countries where you can go for a romantic drink or be 'en famille'. Also in bad weather, it is a joy to have lunch (can be very simple) in the 'Winter Garden' while watching the snow pour down and you don't have to put your snow boots on! Equally if you are feeling like a day off from skiing & too lazy to cook, you can enjoy a delicious lunch salad, with the warm sun filtering through the windows when it is freezing outside! In Spring and Summer the Alex Terrace is a sun trap or somewhere to enjoy the mountains under an enormous umbrella while sipping a glass of the local Fendant (the white wine from the Valais).
As far as use of the spa, tennis & squash courts, & swimming pool, unless the hotel is extremely busy (Christmas & Easter) it is usually possible to use these facilities but you need to ask Alex Perren who manages the hotel. These facilities, together with the massage treatments, etc. are really reserved for guests of the Alex Hotel. Understandably people just wanting to us the pool & never the bar or restaurant are unlikely to be given permission to do so. So recommend that guest in Zayetta go down & have the odd drink or meal & let Alex know that you are using the hotel before asking! If they are too busy there are many other swimming pools in Zermatt which are never too busy for outside guests.
