Location Description

*** St Hilaire d'Ozilhan has a small boulangerie, hotel and restaurant and quiet bar. It is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves and has five domaines within a few minutes where you can sample the local Cote du Rhone wines. The nearest town is Remoulins 3kms away with a supermarket, shops, resaurants and tourist ofice.

The Gite is ideally suited for access to the top tourist attractions of the Region. The nearest and most famous is the world heritage site of the Pont du Gard. This magnificent Roman aquaduct is still intact where it crosses the river Gardon. As well as the bridge, the river becomes a hive of family activity in the summer with swimming in the river and sunbathing on small ‘beach’ areas.

For the more active there are nearby opportunities for kayaking, cycling, walking, riding, swimming and golf (9 holes).

To the North othe ancient town of Uzes is just fifteen minutes drive away. Encircled by the Boulevard Gambetta, the medieval town is a maze of small streets and shaded squares lined with 17th and 18th century private residences. The old City centre is listed as a protected historical sector and still preserves its glorious heritage. On Saturday morning the largest and liveliest market in the region is held.

To the East is the city of Avignon with its famous Pont d’Avignon. The Rhone flows through the city and the old city walls provide a historic backdrop. Avignon is full of history, life, youth, art, music and activity. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

To the West you have the city of Nimes with its Roman amphitheatre being one of the best preserved of all the 70 known Roman amphitheaters. The Roman influence is highly visible in some of the most extensive remains in Europe.

To the South there is the dramatic Camargue, the salty delta of the Rhone where it flows into the Mediterranean. The region is renowned for its wild white horses, bulls and beautiful beaches. Horse riding, sailing and kayaking are all available here.

The Region

The Gard region is a typical Mediterranean region. It enjoys approximately 300 days of sunshine per year, has 23 kilometres of coastline, and its altitude rises from sea level to 1,567 metres. From the sea, through the Camargue to the mountains it offers an extraordinary historic and cultural heritage of 550 listed buildings.

The garrigue is a region of hills, terraces and limestone plateaux with sparse vegetation as a result of deforestation 300 years ago. It offer olive tress, palms and the aniseed perfume of thyme. Further south, the Camargue is 40,000 hectares of lakes, marshes and low-lying land shaped by human determination with a little help from the Rhone and the sea.

The Pont du Gard is just 4kms away and is visible (in the mornings) from the bedroom windows. It is one of the most visited sites in the world. It is the best preserved central part of a Roman aqueduct which stretched for 50kms. With its 49 arches and standing 50 metres high it is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
