The Property
Casa Della Loggie is beautifully situated with stunning mountain views. The front door opens into a large open plan living area from which you can look up to see the mezzanine floor and vaulted ceiling. The kitchen area contains storage cupboards, a fridge, washing machine and gas cooker. There is also a pretty working fireplace.
The living/dining area has a sofa, a double sofabed, a coffee table and dining table and chairs. There is also satellite TV and a DVD player. Bedlinen, towels, a hairdryer and iron are provided. These houses were built into the hillside and Casa Della Loggia has a grotto which helps to keep the house cool during the warm summer months, as does the large electric ceiling fan.
The double bedroom is upstairs on the mezzanine floor, overlooking the living area below and, itself, directly below the vaulted ceiling, as is the passageway which leads to the door to the single bedroom. The single bedroom has french windows which open onto a small balcony which has the same stunning views as the verandah. The house sleeps a maximum of 5 people.
We would ask you not to smoke inside the house but an ashtray is provided for those who wish to smoke on the verandah or upstairs balcony.
In addiion to the town itself, there are many places to visit by car. In the countryside of Irpinia, the area in which Calitri is located, and the adjacent Vulture there are numerous ancient villages high on the hills and mountains and ruins of old castles and cathedrals. The ancient town of Melfi is only a short drive away. Calitri is about the same distance from the Amalfi coast to the west and the Adriatic coast to the east and, in the winter, there is skiing in the La Cena ski resort which is about a 50 minute drive.

Calitri is a small town with about 5,500 inhabitants set in the Italian appenines. It has many bars and restaurants, both in the Borgo and in the newer part of the town. Most are within easy walking distance. The food is good and extremely reasonable. There are also a number of small supermarkets within easy walking distance and there is a market on Thursday mornings. There are pharmacies, doctors' surgeries, banks, a post office and all the little shops you would expect to find in a small town. Calitri is famous for its ceramics and there are a number of shops which sell these items. It also specialises in cheese making and you can buy local cheeses and wines in the town. There is also an internet cafe.
The local council, with funds from the Italian government and the European Union, has invested the best part of 2m euros in undertaking a renovation of the Antico Borgo, (the historic centre) the castle and the piazza. A small old church was recently re-discovered. Staying in the Borgo will give you a glimpse of life as it has been for centuries with its old cobbled streets and there are still a few old shops there such as a provisions shop and a haberdashery shop which look and feel much as they might have done a century ago. They are both a 3 or 4 minute walk from Casa Della Loggia. In addition, up two flights of old stone stairs is the bakery (open from 4am!) which makes the bread for the shops in the town and from which you can buy fresh bread and cakes.
Car hire is available in Calitri from about 30-40 euros per day and there are many places of interest to visit in the area (please see the website: www.casaloggia.co.uk). If you want to drive a bit further afield, the Amalfitan coast takes about one and a half hours to reach as does the Adriatic coast.
The nearest airport is Naples which is about a one and a half hours drive away. It is not too far from Rome and Bari airports. Please see the website for directions.
