18th Century Chateau is own, private grounds
Dournes is built on 2 floors (not counting the cellars or attic). It has everything you'd hope for if you're looking to stay in style - tiled floors, chandeliers, sweeping staircase, mahogany dining table - as well as everything you ned to get away from it all (the pool, the gardens, the hammock...!)
Accommodation: Self Catering |

The Property
We could bore you with the dull facts - that it's 200 years old, sleeps up to 11, etc, etc. But we hope (and think) you'll just fall in love with it at first sight...as we did. In putting together this advert, we've found it hard to choose the best photo of Dournes. We opted for the shot of the rear with the stone staircases leading up to the balcony that overlooks the gardens but the truth is we fell in love with the ivy-clad front, with its huge oak door that you open with a 6 inch-long ornate key. Sitting in deckchairs or lying in the hammock on those lazy summer days, more or less any view of the gardens gets us all misty-eyed!
It may call itself a chateau and obviously the exterior shots are impressive (to say the least!) but we'd say Dournes is a big, family house. We've holidayed happily here with our four kids since they were small. Sadly they still seem to want to spend time here with us now they are big and the only difference is that they no longer play endless games of hide and seek in the gardens - now it's endless sun-bathing and ipod-listening!
In truth, we'd admit (and our eldest two would tell you) that if it's the all-night party scene your after than we're not the house you're looking for (although there is one disco/club we know off 8km away)! No, we're about getting away from it all and spending time with the family (or losing them somewhere in our 15 acres when they get too much for you!) We're about leisurely bike rides to the nearby villages, walks in the woods up in the mountains...or just doing nothing at all down by the pool, in the hammock or in some remote corner of the garden!
Go on! Spoil yourselves!

Notes on Facilities:
The chateau shares its pool and table tennis table (and its washing machine and tumble dryer) with our farmhouse that we also rent out separately but which those renting the chateau can either rent as well or rent 'unoccupied' at half the going rate to ensure maximum privacy/exclusivity.
*** Our two properties are set deep in the Tarn countryside. Surrounded by farmland as well as enjoying their own 15 acre plot, they are not overlooked from any angle. They are located c8km outside the small market town of Revel (with its excellent fresh food market every Saturday in/around its medieval central square) and an hour's drive from both Toulouse and Carcassonne airports.
After years of happy holidays here with our 4 children and their many friends, we can testify that they are ideal for families or large groups. On site we offer the heated pool, an outdoor table tennis table and extensive gardens: all the pool furniture (and towels), garden furniture (tables and chairs for c20) and even a hammock are provided! The chateau has a fully equipped Games Room which has a full size snooker table, a table football table, TV, DVD and video library as well as plenty of games, jigsaws and books.
Whilst ours is a rural location (with a strong culinary tradition – cassoulet, foie gras, aligot), there’s also plenty to do nearby. We have canoeing, windsurfing, horse-riding, mountain biking, go-karts, pedaloes, fishing and walking, all within a 30 minutes drive: there’s even an adventure theme park (Le Cri du Tarzan) 20 minutes away. The nearby Montagnes Noire offer caves and ruined, Cathar castles. The medieval cities of Albi (cathedral, Toulouse Lautrec museum, winding streets) and Carcassonne (the walled city is a World Heritage Site) are each an hour’s drive away, as is the major city of Toulouse (extensive shopping, space museum). The beaches of the Mediterranean and the peaks of the Pyrenees are each and hour and a half away by car.

The Chateau
You approach through iron gates, along a sweeping, gravel drive through mature trees - which are home to red squirrels, woodpeckers and even eagles. It's full name may be 'Chateau de Dournes' but, in truth, Dournes is an 18th century ‘Maison de Maitre’. We have recently refurbished it, finishing it to a high standard and equipping it with a mix of modern and antique furniture.
Our ground floor accommodation comprises a lounge (that seats 8), a Chinese sitting room, a chandeliered dining room that seats 12, a study, the Games Room (with its full size snooker table, table football table and TV), a fully equipped kitchen and utility room and a WC. Up the curved stone staircase, there are 5 bedrooms on the first floor. The master double has a separate dressing room and bathroom as well as its own sun terrace. The second double is also ensuite. The other 3 bedrooms - a twin and two singles - share another bathroom and 2 WCs.
The remaining 3 beds (1 twin, 1 single) are in their own, separate ‘caretaker’s’ apartment which is adjacent to the chateau. This has its own entrance, lounge, kitchen and bathroom and is rented free with the Chateau. We find it ideal for teenagers or visiting grandparents!
The Farmhouse
Our farmhouse is also ivy-clad and the locals say it has the best views of any property in the nearbourhood - over several miles of farmland towards the hilltop village of Puylaurens. It is fronted by an orchard (plums, apples, pears) and woodland. Like the chateau, we've recently refurbished it, equipping it with modern furniture.
Ground floor accommodation comprises a lounge, a large and fully equipped kitchen and breakfast area and a WC. There are 3 bedrooms on the first floor, one double and two twin, as well as a bathroom (bath, shower and WC).
Rent Separately or Together? It's Your Choice!
Whilst the farmhouse shares its location and certain facilities (the pool, washing and tumble dryer machines) with our chateau, it is separated from the chateau by 50m of woodland so the two properties are very separate from one another. Indeed, we’ve let our 18 year old son stay in the farmhouse with his friends and, in the chateau, we never heard their all night antics!
However, to ensure maximum privacy and exclusive use of all our facilities, please note that we offer those renting the Chateau the option of also renting the farm ‘unoccupied’ at half the going rate. But why not holiday with friends and take both houses? We find that this is when Dournes really comes alive!
When to Go?
Obviously, we think you'll enjoy the long, warm summer days at Dournes. However, if you fancy a real 'escape' during the winter, sat in front of the log fire in our kitchen, the chateau is the place for you (both properties have central heating).
Eating Out and Other Food Matters
Probably the first thing to say is that you might not want to eat out once you've eaten out in our gardens, under the trees and watched the star-studded sky appear above you (both properties have their own BBQs)! We think the meat here is wonderful - especially the lamb and veal. There's a free-range pork farm within 2km and Revel has a butcher's outlet for the local farmers whose range and quality is better than anything we've found in the UK. The Saturday fresh food market in Revel is spectacular to see - photos of it have featured in at least one French cook book we know of - never mind fun to shop at! Revel also has several supermarkets: our nearest hypermarket is 20 minutes drive away at Castres.
However, it would be a shame not to also step out and taste the local cuisine. There's plenty of restaurants for all tastes and ages within 20 minutes drive (the nearest is less than 5 minutes away) - everything from a pizzeria to a michellin-starred restaurant! The local dish is cassoulet: Castelnaudry, 20km away, claims the title of the 'World Capital' of this sausage, pork, duck and bean stew. But the foie gras is also like butter and our kids love Aligot (a cheesy, garlic-flavoured mased potato). The local wine, Gaillac, is, like most south-west French appellations, at its best as red and rose.
