Dating back at least three centuries, the house has been functioning since 1991 as a small guesthouse "Argonauta" with a resident owner. Today’s Argonauta features 5 improved rooms with bathroom and breakfast included.

ACCOMODATION
The accommodation in the Argonauta consists of 5 bedrooms with private bathrooms, including 2 new Suites which are Flores' largest bedrooms. Frescoes. All the rooms are detailed in volcanic rock and wood.
Our large breakfast’s served between 8:30 and 12:00 a.m. and, on demand, we can also prepare a Backpacker’s Picnic, so that you can lunch along one of Flores' outstanding footpaths. Breakfast is served in the new Dining Room which opens onto the patio. This patio has sunshades, a barbecue, and tables detailed in volcanic rock and wood, and is the ideal place to sit or dine in the summer. Here you can listen to the sounds of rural life while resting or talking, or you can sip a drink in the Sitting Room with music, TV, library and free internet access.

The Patio bedroom is so named because it has direct access to the Argonauta patio by way of a stone staircase beyond a little hall which also gives access to the bathroom with a shower, hair-dryer and basalt detailing. The Patio bedroom, fourth best room in the hierarchy of the house, features a wardrobe, a sofa, a writing desk and a rocking chair as well as a mini-fridge and a built in cupboard with a 1929 frame. An extra bed for a third person is available for this room.

The Suite 2000 is the room which completed Argonauta's thorough restoration and still expresses its spirit. It offers unique features within its unusual one bedroom apartment layout: independent access from the outside world by way of a stone staircase which goes on to the common patio. The connection to the rest of the house is near the Sitting Room, and the suite has a comfortable double bed, a wardrobe, a sofa and a CD player, a writing-desk and a table, a kitchenette with small stove/oven and kitchen utensils, a cupboard, a sink, a fridge, a traditional bread oven with chimney and wood, an old fire iron which can be used as a fireplace and a large double bath (1.90 x 0.90m.). If you travel with children or have a small group, the Suite 2000 offers the possibility of accommodating a 3rd person in an extra bed.

Any North Atlantic argonaut will encounter the very best in comfort here in the Southwest Suite. The interior is lit by a big skylight window looking towards the eastern mountains and waterfalls, and another trapezoidal window overlooking the fields of Courelas and the waves of Fajã Grande's western shores. There is a small terrace where one can sit and contemplate the sunset over the sea, the church and the westernmost houses of Europe. The bathroom of the Southwest Suite features a small bathtub and a hair-dryer, and the bed has a wide Japanese futon mattress. The slatted doors of the wardrobe keep the clothes aired while the sofa, table, upholstered chairs, a CD player, a mini-fridge and free tea & coffee help ensure the guests' comfort and relaxation. At 60 sq. metres, the Southwest Suite can host up to 5 people with the sofa bed, an extra bed and partitions.

This bedroom has two large skylights (Velux) which open toward the islet of Monchique to the north and share another view over the mountains and waterfalls to the east. Furthermore, the suite has a little terrace facing the west which provides a beautiful view of the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean. This huge room (60 sq. metres) and its twin the Southwest Suite represent the best of Argonauta's offering, featuring free tea & coffee, a mini-fridge, a CD player, a relaxing sofa-bed, tables and upholstered chairs. The bathroom has a shower, bidet, hair-dryer and details in basalt, the wardrobe is illuminated by natural light from the inside, and both bed and mattress are unusually long at 2,05 m., which will guarantee perfect comfort for even the most discerning guest. The Northwest Suite can comfortably host 2, 3, 4 or 5 people with the sofa-bed or an additional bed and dividing curtains.

*** LOCATION
Both the Argonauta and Casa Via d'Água are located in the heart of Fajã Grande. Lying on the west coast of Flores, Fajã Grande has some 200 inhabitants and it is Europe's westernmost village. It is situated on the seashore of a coastal plain (fajã) and is enclosed by a high cliff with about 20 waterfalls. A few minutes from home are natural rock pools, water holes under the waterfalls, a couple of restaurants and a Balneario with swimming facilities, a natural sea-water swimming pool for children and some little taverns. All this lying under the sunset over the ocean.
